Lowboy Trailer: Types, Benefits, and Buying Guide

If you find a lowboy trailer for sale at a price you can afford, it’s really worth the investment for your fleet and your company. This type of semi-trailer is often called a lowbed trailer or a double drop trailer, due to the two drops in the deck height. The low deck makes it safer for heavy haul transport and easier to load weighty, tall, and wide equipment.

The term lowboy gooseneck trailer is used due to the shape of the arched front end (or ‘neck’) that connects the trailer to trucks or other heavy haul transport vehicles. Continue reading for more information on the types of lowboy trailer available, their benefits, and their applications.

Types of lowboy trailer

Removable gooseneck trailer

An RGN lowboy trailer allows the gooseneck to be removed from the truck for easy loading and unloading. This also means the deck can be lowered to make it easier for heavier equipment and machinery to be loaded.

Fixed neck lowboy

Unlike an RGN trailer, a fixed neck lowboy is permanently attached to the trailer, rather than being detachable or adjustable. This makes loading a little more challenging as the gooseneck does not lower to the ground.

Hydraulic neck lowboy

Hydraulic detachable goosenecks(HDGs) use hydraulic cylinders to lift and lower the deck when the trailer is connected to the truck. This is quicker, easier, and safer. The front deck height can also be adjusted to suit the terrain on a specific journey. At the heavier end of our range, we have 110HDG (capable of carrying 110,000 pounds) and 120HDG (carrying120,000 pounds) trailers to choose from.

Mechanical neck lowboy

These are lighter in weight in comparison to hydraulic neck lowboy trailers, but they take more time to attach and detach. It typically involves using pins, cranks, levers, and manual labor. They are much cheaper though and easier to maintain.

Air neck lowboy

This type of lowboy trailer uses an air suspension system to raise and lower the gooseneck. It is similar to a hydraulic system, but instead of cylinders an air neck lowboy uses airbags and an air compressor. This allows for quick and easy loading.

Extendable lowboy trailer

The deck length can be adjusted to make it longer or shorter. This makes the design ideal for carrying oversized or extra-long loads. These often have an increased number of axles to support heavier and longer loads. Here, you can search through a number of models from different lowboy trailer manufacturers, including 110HDE and 90HDE models.

Typical applications for lowboy trailers

Lowboy trailers are designed to handle oversized, heavy, and tall loads by providing a low deck, extra support and versatile loading options. This is what separates this heavy haul trailer from a standard flatbed trailer. They are essential for industries such as construction, manufacturing, and heavy haul transport. General load capacities range from standard models that can load up to 30 tons, up to 55 ton lowboy trailer models and beyond.

The trailers with larger load capacities are often used to transport:

  • Bulldozers, cranes, excavators, and backhoe loaders.
  • Extraordinarily large manufacturing machines.
  • Vehicles such as buses, trucks, and tanks.
  • Construction materials such as steel beams and concrete pipes.
  • Industrial structures like transformers or generators.
  • Military equipment such as armored vehicles and artillery.

Advantages of using a lowbed trailer

  • Low deck height helps to accommodate taller loads.
  • Low center of gravity provides better stability during transport.
  • High-strength materials withstand the weight and pressure of heavy equipment.
  • Multiple axles distribute weight and boost stability.
  • Loading and unloading heavy loads is made easier.
  • Can be used to transport a wide variety of equipment and vehicles.

Disadvantages of using a lowbed trailer

  • Typically more expensive when compared to standard trailers.
  • Less maneuverable, especially in tight spaces, due to their size and number of axles.
  • Hydraulic and air neck lowboys require more maintenance and care to ensure safe operation.
  • Special permits and regulations may apply for each item you transport and the place you transport them to. For example, there may be weight limits or travel restrictions on specific roads. You may even need an escort vehicle.
